A statement from Kim McCarthy, our Chair, in the wake of the SCOTUS decision today

I invite our Greene County elected officials to make their OWN statement on this direct assault on half of their constituents.

Considering 90% of our elected officials are Republicans, their responses will be even more highly considered than Mayor Mims, who is a Democrat. I would love to see some courage be shown on this issue.

Who is going to stand up against this far-right, religious attack on our very rights? Where are these patriots now that women’s rights are being violated?

Will it be the County Commissioners? Or someone from your city board? Perhaps the Sheriff? Or the Prosecutor? Someone on your school board? What about Mike Turner? If they are pleased for this ruling, let’s hear that from them as well. I encourage you to ask them. Call, email, stand outside their office with a sign.

Infrastructure Legislation and Internet Access – how you will benefit

The Infrastructure legislation includes monies to “ensure every American has acccess to high-speed internet”. What does that mean?

Here are a *few* items to consider.

– access to internet and reduced costs

– children who are able to do their homework from home

– close the digital divide between the haves and have nots

– ability to apply on-line for jobs (the *only* way to apply for many jobs these days)

– ability to apply for unemployment, SNAP, and many other US government programs and benefits

– ability to do on-line banking for those who have difficulty driving, walking, standing, or whose bank is distant

If you need help now here is a great program that started about June 1st this year. Please share this on your social media.

How will the Infrastructure Legislation put items back on shelves and create jobs?

This legislation will provide monies to repair, eliminate maintenance backlogs, and reduce congestion. Years of neglect have left us with crumbling roads and bridges.

Millions are designated for repairing, upgrading, and reimagining our ports and airports. Reducing the congestion at our ports has been noted to be the first priority.

Yes, covid has had an impact on what we can and cannot buy when we want due to factory closings, but our ports and airports have not been invested in over the years and that failure to invest in our ports is now evident as demand for goods has increased.

This legislation will strength our supply chain to help move goods faster, more efficiently, and make us more competitive in global commerce.

This work will create good Union jobs. Our President Biden has noted often how important Union jobs are to the middle class.

There will be non-Union jobs as well – all the other businesses that benefit from the increased monies coming into the community.

The general public is invited to review preliminary floodplain maps and learn about flood risk in their community.  Those interested may drop-in at any time during the event to talk one-on-one with FEMA and State ODNR representatives.

CHICAGO- Representatives from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will host a Flood Risk Information Open House on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at the Greene County Social Services Building Media Room:  541 Ledbetter Road, Xenia, OH  45385. The Open House will provide residents with an opportunity to review a recently completed preliminary Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and its accompanying preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs).

The FIS and the FIRMs provide vase flood information, delineate areas subject to significant flood hazards within the county, and offer information public officials may use when permitting development in the floodplain.

The Open House will be staffed with representatives from various local, state, and federal agencies who will provide information about flood risk, flood insurance, floodplain development regulations, and the process for floodplain mapping. The newly prepared preliminary floodplain maps will be on display. Once the maps become effective, these maps will be used by floodplain permit officials, builders and developers, lenders, realtors, insurance agents and the general public to determine flood risk, develop mitigation measures, and encourage wise and responsible risk management decision-making.

Property owners, realtors, lenders and insurance agents are urged to attend and take advantage of this preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation to reduce the loss of life and property and support a culture of readiness for all hazards, including natural disasters, acts of terrorism and other major incidents.
